Looking for wine tasting tips? We’ve got lots of fun and useful information on how to correctly and effectively taste all kinds of wines!
As many discerning wine critics will tell you, wine tasting is the key to developing an educated understanding and appreciation for many wines. The following paragraphs include tips that will help you to be able to taste just about any kind of wine!
There are those who “drink” wine and those who “taste” wine. Wine tasting is an art that can be learned, (and enjoyed) by almost everyone! The three basic rules for wine tasting are as follows: (1) look, (2) smell and (3) taste.
The first step in wine tasting is looking. Looking at wine can tell you many things. For example, by examining red wine, you can determine it’s alcohol content, sweetness and even it’s age! Although you cannot tell exactly how old a red wine is by merely looking at it, you can determine whether it is new or mature. A orange or brownish tint at the edge of red wine may indicate maturity, while a purplish tint may suggest youth.
The second step in wine tasting is smelling the wine. Swirl the wine around in a glass to release certain molecules that will allow you to sense different aromas within the wine.
Actually tasting the wine is the third, (and probably the most important) step in wine tasting. First, take an initial taste to awaken your taste buds. Next, take another drink, this time sloshing the wine in your mouth to examine it’s body and texture. This will allow you to determine whether the wine is sweet or bitter, light or rich and smooth or harsh.
Now that you have a basic understanding of wine tasting, you will be better prepared to experience and enjoy the wines of the world!
